THE GLOSSARY

A shared language for a new subject.

Plain-language definitions of the energy, tokenization, and evidence terms used across our field guides. Follow each reference for the full context.

Asset claim
A described entitlement associated with an asset or an obligation. The relevant documents need to identify what is owed, by whom, and under which conditions.

Base gas
Gas maintained as operating inventory in underground storage to support pressure and deliverability. EIA distinguishes it from working gas.
Read the context →
Blockchain gas
On Ethereum, a unit for measuring computational work. It is not a physical quantity of natural gas.
Read the context →
Commodity exposure
A relationship between an instrument’s outcome and a commodity or reference price. Do not assume that exposure provides a right to physical delivery.
Read the context →
Counterparty
The party on the other side of an obligation. In a research review, identify who actually owes delivery, payment, or another performance.
Read the context →
Custody
Arrangements for holding or controlling access to an asset or digital record. Access to a token and rights to physical performance are separate review questions.
Read the context →
Deliverability
A measure of how much gas a storage facility can withdraw over a specified period. It is different from total inventory or maximum storage capacity.
Read the context →
Delivery right
A specified entitlement to request physical performance under defined terms, such as quantity, location, period, and applicable conditions.
Read the context →
ERC-20
A common Ethereum token interface covering balances, transfers, allowances, and related events. It does not establish commodity backing.
Read the context →
Evidence register
An editorial review tool listing the documents that support individual assertions, including origin, scope, effective period, version, and limitations.
Read the context →
Gas tokenization
On this site, the proposed digital representation of specified natural gas-related rights. The precise underlying claim must be defined separately.
Read the context →
Inventory
A recorded quantity held at a particular time. In gas-related research, distinguish actual inventory from a facility’s maximum capacity and a geological estimate.
Read the context →
Liquidity
The practical ability to enter or exit an arrangement under its actual conditions. A transferable digital balance is not a guarantee of a willing buyer.
Read the context →
LNG
Liquefied natural gas: natural gas cooled into liquid form for shipping and storage, with regasification used when returning it to gaseous delivery.
Read the context →
Natural gas
A physical energy commodity consisting mainly of methane. It is a different concept from the gas used to describe computation on Ethereum.
Read the context →
Oracle
A mechanism for supplying off-chain information to a smart contract. The correctness and scope of the supplied evidence still need examination.
Read the context →
Proved reserves
Estimated hydrocarbon volumes recoverable with reasonable certainty under existing economic and operating conditions, based on geological and engineering evidence.
Read the context →
Real-world asset
A broad descriptive label for an asset or claim beyond the digital ledger. The label alone does not specify a holder’s rights or prove backing.
Read the context →
Reconciliation
A process of comparing records with the same scope, units, and relevant dates, then explaining or investigating differences.
Read the context →
Redemption
A process for exercising or completing a defined claim. Its meaning, conditions, timing, and costs must come from the actual arrangement.
Read the context →
Resource estimate
A broader estimate of a natural resource. EIA distinguishes proved reserves from other resource categories; the exact classification and assumptions matter.
Read the context →
Revenue right
A described entitlement to a defined share of receipts or another payment calculation. The base, deductions, timing, and responsible party must be specified.
Read the context →
Smart contract
Software that executes specified actions on a blockchain. Review the implementation and permissions separately from the underlying commodity obligation.
Read the context →
Storage capacity
The maximum volume a facility can store under its defined operating conditions. Capacity is not the same as the actual gas held at a given time.
Read the context →
Token rights
The actual holder entitlements described by the governing arrangement. A symbol, logo, network, or wallet display is not a substitute for those terms.
Read the context →
Working gas
Gas in an underground storage reservoir above the base-gas level, distinguished by EIA from working gas capacity and total storage capacity.
